Time-Targeting, the New Avenue for Supplement Brands

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:40 Comments comments (1)

It was Geoffrey Woo, CEO and Co-founder of Nootrobox, who said “I think the timing and how the body absorbs ingredients is an important dimension that companies are going to be considering for the future of human performance.”

In the realm of nutrition, the debate pertinent to the period in which certain vitamins, supplements or other foods should be consumed to achieve maximum results is gaining traction. Some aspects of this debate speaks to nutrition objective, whether that is fatigue mitigation, weight loss, or mental alertness, determining the best time of day for intake. The shift to more time/period specific products is quite evident the market shelves with pre- and post- drinks, bars and supplements becoming more pervasive.

Nootrobox, the San Francisco company, is already capitalizing on this new wave of time-targeting supplements. Linked to their promise that their product will unlock your mental latent are their capsules containing four products; each formulated to be effective in the morning to reduce fatigue, improve memory, mitigate the afternoon lethargy and among others.

One of the most viewed article is New Hope Network’s own “A Guide to Optimizing Your Vitamins and Supplements Intake”. The rationale behind the piece’s popularity stems from the lucid guidelines about when vitamins are absorbed, when to eat to achieve weight loss and the list goes on. Credit must also go to Healthspan, a UK vitamins and supplier, whose research on when vitamins are best absorbed functioned as the basis.

Dr. Will Cole, a functional medicine practitioner in the States acknowledged that people may consume their supplements anytime they desire despite their goals but understanding your routine could aid greatly in extracting maximum benefits from the supplements. “If you need all day energy, try taking energy boosting supplements in the morning or if you need to build muscle, take those supplements a little before you work out. It’s all about timing and listening to your body and your individual needs.”

In 2015, a survey was done by the NBJ illustrated that roughly 30% of the participants were concerned with sleep deprivation and fatigue. As expected, market specialists and manufacturers are more focused on the market trend than what science says. At this point in time, the trend is towards energy.

In brief, as consumers become more aware that varied times of day necessitates different nutrition, supplement brands are not hesitating to capitalizing on this opportunity.

Why, why, why after 2 years in business???

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:30 Comments comments (0)

Ever since the first time I heard Simon Sinek’s “Why” talk, I have been struggling and searching for my own ‘why’.

I know what I do, how I do it and why I started my business. My ultimate and greater ‘why’ purpose has somehow eluded me for the better part of two years.

I have come a long way on my journey from science geek to CEO and along the way listened to many business experts, taken advantage of government and local business programs and read A LOT. I have just finished reading my 17th book out of my 20-book goal for the year and book #17’s topic fell in line with what I needed to realize for myself.

I grew up in a busy single-parent household with two siblings all of us doing multiple extra-curricular activities at once. I loved being busy. I was involved in everything I could get my hands on, to the point where in high-school several teachers were concerned I was doing too much. I still managed good grades and developed my organizational and planning skills, which to this day are my favourite things to do.

In developing those skills, I learned how to manage my time and complete tasks efficiently but also correctly (otherwise my mother would make me redo it = waste of time). Upon reflection wasting time might be my ultimate nightmare!

I provide a niche service to my clients in a niche market, I am very qualified to do so and treat my clients as partners even friends instead of items on my to do list. It dawned on me halfway through book #17 reading about others who have built their companies around genuinely helping others and changing lives that this IS my ‘Why’.

I realize that ‘helping others’ is ultimately everyone’s ‘why’ (hopefully). I have (re)discovered that my greatest joy and purpose is giving people easy digestible advice that they can implement immediately to improve their situation.

In my current role as CEO at NaturalSci Regulatory Consulting, I maximize other’s efficiency to launch their products. My goal is to take away the one burden (Regulatory) that clients’ do not want to deal with. So they can focus on what they are good at, and I can do what I am good at- getting their products licensed and compliant. We also only work with companies who's products and people we believe in so that we are absolutely genuine in wanted to help them grow and succeed.

I believe my purpose is to help others increase their efficiency and share any useful tips/books/advice that I learn along the way to benefit those around me.

In conclusion may I ask…How can I help you?

Can you make $Money$ in Canada?

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:25 Comments comments (0)

YES! The increasing baby boomer population and growing health awareness among adults is good news for the Canadian nutritional supplement industry. Canada ranks in the Top-10 countries for global supplement sales.

The rising aging population have boosted demand for industry products. Plus, Sports Nutrition products have surged in popularity among younger demographics.

Industry value added is forecast to grow at a rate of 4.0% over the next 10-year period.

An estimated 14 million Canadians take vitamins = sales of about $370 million/yr.

This industry in Canada is currently valued at over CAN$3 billion, while vitamin and supplement sales alone are going to reach CAN$1.3 billion in 2017.

Canada is one of the Global Leaders in vitamin and supplement usage. 71% of the population use natural health products and 38% claim to take at least one nutritional supplement every day.

Canadian Natural Health Products Regulations are some of the world's most stringent when it comes to nutritional supplements. These tight regulations are to ensure only the highest-quality products reach consumers. These Regulations also open your products to the Global market, as many International Health Organizations model their import/sale Regulations after Canada.

Why Now is a Great Time to get into Canada

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:20 Comments comments (0)

The Market is Growing Fast!

Rising aging population boosted demand for products + sports nutrition products have surged in popularity among younger demographics. Industry value added is forecast to grow at an annualized rate of 4.0% over the 10-year period. An estimated 14 million Canadians —take vitamins, contributing to sales of about $370 million a year. Canada is one of the global leaders in vitamin and supplement usage.

The Regulatory Framework is Changing

Health Canada introduced the ‘Self-Care Proposal’ in September 2016- which drastically changes the current natural product regulations. In addition to changes in the application process and review there will also be a COST RECOVERY component which is not currently in place. If your company is thinking about getting into Canada and have it on your expansion growth radar, NOW is a great time to get your licenses while there are still predictable regulations and FREE submission to Health Canada.

My Expo West Experience

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:15 Comments comments (0)

This March, was my first time attending New Hope Network's Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA. I really had no idea what I was in for despite reading as much material as I could and speaking with previous attendees. I knew it was HUGE, busy and fantastic.

So I prepared as I expect many did, planning out the education sessions I wanted to attend, booking meetings with prospective clients and future strategic partners. I had pre-planned my visits to the show floor and decided to go-with-the-flow when I got there for the rest!

DAY 1

We arrived Tuesday night so I could get some rest and be up and ready to tackle Wednesday! What struck me as I pulled into the Marriott Wednesday morning (other than the sheer volume of palm trees!) was the level of organization and preparation already executed and awaiting the attendees arrival! I was able to register and get my passes within minutes and head off to the Summit!

Wednesday's education session was the highly anticipated CBD Summit which was scheduled for an entire half day! I was very curious what the US landscape was and the thoughts of the industry leaders speaking. I was very impressed with the organization of the Summit in that every aspect of the topic was covered from market trends to farmers to scientific/clinical applicability to legality and regulation. I learned a lot and was especially surprised (and happy) with the number of times Canada was mentioned throughout the morning! In every presentation there was a shout-out to what we have going on "up-North" and how far as advanced Canada is in the industry! GO Canada!

DAY 2

Thursday! Jammed packed with education sessions all over the 'block' and the opening of the North Hall Exhibits which housed the "Hot Products" this year.

The morning began with the 'Stae of the Industry' address *contact me if you want the slides*. This session covered the changing retail landscape and way consumers are purchasing in the natural products industry. In addition to innovative brands finding new solutions in the changing market. After which I attended the Disrupted Retail session which was very appropriate and the first sessions' speakers gave really powerful and tangible information to those in attendace of how retail is NOT dead and what steps/strategies are essential to keep relevant in the market with your changing customers!

I then headed over (after a meeting) to the Global Export Series which consumed my afternoon discussing the European market, Canada and US Export Requirements. I did make it over to the North Halls and (holy moly) I realized immediately that I was not in Kansas anymore! It was packed! Which I'm sure a regular to these types of trade shows is used to, I however was not! I made it around the floor quickly trying to take in all the new products and see if I could gauge any trends in person. I tried a few samples and brought some back to the hotel to share! Observations from the floor: fortified bottled waters, lots of gluten and dairy free food options, lots of natural snacking options.

My favourites were Unique Pretzels https://www.uniquesplits.com/, Em+Pact Bars http://empactbars.com/, Peatos https://worldpeasbrand.com/, GORP bars https://gorpworld.com/ and FIT FIT natural snack https://www.facebook.com/pg/fitfits86/ DELICIOUS!

DAY 3 & 4

Friday morning was the NCN Investor Forum which provided EXCELLENT information on current market trends, what is happening in the investing space and a peek at what is down the line. (I'll share more soon) I then headed over to Hall D- Supplement Hall and was able to chat with some prospects and current clients before the crowds rolled in!

Saturday I had a couple of meetings before heading back to the airport to return home to bitter cold!

Overall, my time in Anaheim was amazing. A HUGE Congratulations to the New Hope team who organizes this phenomenal event and to all of the speakers, sponsors and exhibitors, everyone was truly and genuinely fantastic from staff to attendees to locals. I WILL BE BACK!

*Thank you so much for taking the time to read about my journey in Anaheim, if you have any questions or would like me to follow up with specifics on a topic please let me know!*

Hot or Hype? The CBD Market Overview

Posted on 11 May, 2018 at 14:10 Comments comments (0)

I know you have been thinking about it! Do I buy? Do I invest? Should we expand out product line? All very valid questions especially in early 2018! I will take you through what I learned at the Expo West CBD Summit about a month ago. And no, you are not alone! First of all the CBD Summit was an entire HALF DAY and it was PACKED- standing room only packed...the entire 4+ hours.

Global Hemp comparisons; Canada & EU = miles ahead of the US; on the agricultural and regulatory side. Many US companies are seeking counsel from Canadian companies and beginning to mimic their processes in order to be prepared for when the legislation eventually turns over. Now let's go through some US sales!

No surprise here BIG numbers that are expected to more than double in less than 3 years. The hype is real! As far are sales are concerned. The interesting note here is the jump in Pharmaceutical sales due to the anticipated regulation change. This number in Canada is already present in 2016/2017 though not as high due to population.

We will take a deeper dive into the breakdown of channels where hemp in the US is being sold.

NOTE: The 14% of Natural Retail Sales from 2017 breaks down as follows: 87% Supplements, 12% Topical, 1% Food. These numbers will all shift in the next couple of years with the market moving toward consumable products and mass market.

Biggest takeaways:

Canadian CBD Market and the major acquisitions recently (Canopy growth>mettrum originals, Aphria>Kalytera, Aurora>Hempco, etc)

BIGS making moves (BIG Tobacco, BIG Alcohol, BIG Pharma)

Things to watch in 2018/2019 = Senate Bill, Epidiolex to market, HIA Hoban Law vs DEA, Farm Bill 2018

What does all this mean? There is growing US Leadership Support, FDA/DEA/Court are taking actions, Sec. 7606 could be updated/amended? All of these current items are pressing the movement forward in terms of regulations for legalization and adding structure to the industry in the US. Here is Canada, we are all anxiously awaiting July 1st for our next steps! (and the next BIG moves)

Stay tuned! I will be happy to provide an update as I am keeping my eyes peeled and ready to Regulate!

Check us out!

Trump & the Supplement Industry

Posted on 25 May, 2017 at 13:15 Comments comments (0)

“FDA commissioners come and go, but this is chaos driven by a chaotic White House which is driven by a chaotic president.” These were the words echoed by Jeff Nedelman, a mainstay in Washington since 1972. The issue of contention lies solely around the fact that the Trump administration has indicated that their aim is to reduce regulations surrounding supplements. With this objective comes obvious concern from the public as safety apprehensions surface.

Susan Wincker, former Food and Drug Administration (FD) chief of Staff under the Bush and Obama administration weighed in on the topic. She noted that the 45th president of the free world believes that the FDA is stalling innovation and his choice for the FDA commissioner role, shares the same sentiment. With the concerns of the president being contentious, the industry unfortunately mirrors that attitude which in essence threatens the government’s authority to regulate. This could fuel the audacity of brands to push boundaries on claims in the shifting regulatory regime.

The fundamental question is what will supplement makers known for flouting the rules during a pro-regulation era do when that time passes and the shackles fall to the ground?

In an Nutrition Business Journal article, ‘Into the darkness’, the possible outcome of the FDA loosening its grip was discussed. If this happens to be the case, state attorneys general could seize the chance. The politics of partisanship complicate the dynamic even more. The article elaborated on how enforcement could make state attorneys look good publicly when they reprimand the president for not demonstrating enough concern for public health. Other pundits say the industry would be in dire need for a stronger hand at the federal level. The rationale behind this is simply that if dealing with one agency is difficult, imagine 50 different offices. Inevitably, less federal enforcement could lead to the rise of more dark players. Supplement lawyer Ashish Talati puts it purely: “You are at risk even if the FDA is not coming at you.” His words come on the back of comments about class action attorneys playing crusaders in light of the evident restraint by the federal body.

Admittedly, there is a light in the darkness. The greatest benefit in what commentators are calling, “the post regulatory era,” could be novelty rules. The tag on the Trump administration is business friendly and living up to this sees the eradication of unfavourable regulations and the re-writing of others. The new regulations are highly expected to come with more opportunities than restrictions.

In surmising, there is a lot that can change with a new president but the same is true of the reverse. Shoppers are searching for transparency and quality but with the FDA’s authority being redefined, the uncertainty remains a major concern.
